Escalating Tensions: International Community Urges Serbia to Withdraw Troops from Kosovo Border

Amidst rising tensions, global leaders demand Serbia's troop withdrawal from Kosovo. An urgent plea for peace echoes worldwide, urging dialogue and de-escalation to avert a crisis.

In a rapidly escalating situation, the United States and its allies are closely monitoring the deployment of Serbian forces along the Kosovo border. Following a deadly armed attack in the village of Banjskë in Zvečan on September 24th, the international community has called for Serbia to withdraw its troops immediately. The incident resulted in the tragic death of police officer Afrim Bunjaku, sparking a confrontation between the Kosovo Police and the armed group, leaving three attackers dead.

The United States, through spokesperson John Kirby, has strongly condemned the attack and characterized it as a destabilizing move. Kirby emphasized that the large quantity of weaponry discovered poses a significant threat not only to Kosovo but also to international personnel, including NATO forces. The U.S. has urged Serbia to cooperate fully with investigations, insisting that all those involved in the attack be brought to justice. President Vjosa Osmani of Kosovo welcomed the clear stance of the Biden administration, expressing gratitude for the support extended to Kosovo’s border security. She affirmed a commitment to work closely with the U.S. and NATO forces to address security challenges and protect the hard-won freedoms of Kosovo's citizens.

Additionally, Prime Minister Albin Kurti stressed the importance of continuous cooperation between the Kosovo Police and KFOR (Kosovo Force), NATO's peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. He thanked the U.S. for its support in enhancing Kosovo's border security and sought greater assistance against Serbia's aggressive plans. Kurti, during a phone conversation with Jake Sullivan, President Biden's national security advisor, expressed an unwavering commitment to safeguarding all citizens.

The United Kingdom has responded to the crisis by transferring command of a battalion of its military forces within NATO to provide additional support to Kosovo, if necessary. NATO, in response to the evolving situation, has authorized additional forces to address the current crisis in Kosovo.

In the midst of these developments, Prime Minister Edi Rama of Albania voiced unwavering support for Kosovo's security and stability. Rama, while aligning with the United States calls for immediate de-escalation, urged both Kosovo and Serbia to act responsibly and maturely.

Meanwhile, Kosovo continues to seek significant assistance from the United States against Serbia's aggressive military manoeuvres. In a conversation with Jake Sullivan, Prime Minister Kurti emphasized the continuous collaboration between the Kosovo Police and KFOR. He reiterated his gratitude for the support provided by the United States and appealed for greater help in countering Serbia's warlike plans.
